Wounded
by a Dart of Fire So Ardent (1885)
This is, perhaps, the most mystical of experiences described in the autobiography
and cannot be explained but only accepted on faith. This was the most intense
incident of rapture experienced and was described as a force plunged in fire
but also as bearing such sweetness as to overwhelm her whole being.
The window depicts the moment of rapture with a literal flame delving into
her heart as a symbol of the internal experience. Her face is turned upward
with an otherwordly expression that does not yet comprehend what has happened.
This intense an experience of faith is something most of us can only wonder
at and hope to feel in some small measure through our daily devotions.
